Day 1

7-17-10

Boise is gorgeous and the view of the mountains from the plane was incredible!! As soon as I arrived, Dr. Guthrie picked me up, and we headed straight for the zoo! We first toured the office building and Amanda’s personal office.

There we found her new baby Cotton Top Tamarin. She is the tiniest little monkey ever! She is very talkative and is just now learning how to climb the sides of her little bird cage home. She was rescued from her parents when they rejected her shortly after birth, and she has been Dr. Guthrie’s little project since June 6th.

After I got my baby monkey fix for the day, we went on a tour of the zoo. It is beautiful and green here during the summertime and the weather is perfect; Sunny and warm every day with very little humidity. Dr. Guthrie gave me a tour of the zoo and introduced me to all the animals. They have many interesting animals here, and I’m excited to get to work with some of them. After lunch, we went in with the kinkajou, Chewie. At first, we were just observing him as he slept, but when his keeper came in, he didn’t wake up. She threw fruit at him, and even when it pegged him in the face, he still didn’t stir! His keeper got pretty nervous at that point and asked us to come inside. Luckily, by the time we got through the gates and doors to the backside of the enclosure, he had woken up. We fed him fruit by hand and scratched his back.

We also got to feed the lemurs in the enclosure next to Chewie, which was pretty entertaining, considering the fact that one of them is cross-eyed! You really can’t help but laugh. We continued our walk around the zoo and observed the lions, tigers, giraffes, and even stopped by the farm exhibit to pet the goats. Today was a fairly short day since I only arrived just before lunch, but I’m looking forward to caring for the baby tamarin all weekend, and maybe getting outside to check out the rest of Boise!
